The sixth dormitory for men opened on River Campus in September 1959. The building was originally called 'Dorm F' until the following year when it was named for Donald W. Gilbert. He was a 1921 graduate and also a long-time professor and chairman of of economics and business administration. He was appointed the University's first provost in 1948.
Two wings were completed on the north side of the building in 1960.
Gilbert Hall underwent an extensive renovation in 1996-1997.

A second and similar residential hall north of Hoeing, housing 174, was
dedicated in June of 1960 in memory of Donald W. Gilbert, 1921, long-time
professor of economics and University executive," Gilbert Hall, like
Tiernan, was reserved for greenlings. Post-baccalaureate and selected
undergraduates lived in the residence halls as advisers and counselors;
commuting students affiliated with a residence hall--where they might stay
overnight for a nominal fee--and participated in the social affairs of the
unit.
